Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
  • In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Add the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until well combined.
  • Carefully stir in the boiling water, allowing the batter to become smooth and runny, then fold in the chocolate chips.

Baking

  • Divide the batter evenly among the prepared cake pans and bake for 30-35 minutes.
  • Check for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center; it should come out clean.
  • Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Ganache Preparation

  • In a microwave-safe bowl, heat the semi-sweet chocolate chips and heavy cream in 30-second intervals, stirring until smooth.

Assembly

  • Start with one layer of cake on a serving plate and spread a generous layer of ganache on top. Repeat this for each layer.
  • Cover the top and sides of the cake with the remaining ganache.
  • Decorate with chocolate shavings, fresh berries, and edible flowers.

Notes

For an even richer flavor, consider using freshly brewed coffee instead of water and adding a teaspoon of espresso powder to enhance the chocolate notes.
