Ingredients

For the Puff Pastry Nests

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed Creates a crispy base.
  • 1 large egg, for egg wash Gives the nests a golden finish.

For the Sloppy Joe Filling

  • 1 lb ground beef Heart of the dish, rich flavor.
  • 1/2 small onion, finely diced Adds sweetness and earthiness.
  • 1 small red bell pepper, diced Provides color and crunch.
  • 1 cup tomato sauce Rich and tangy flavor base.
  • 1/4 cup ketchup Adds sweetness.
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce Deepens flavor profile.
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar Balances acidity.
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder Enhances aroma.
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika Adds smokiness.
  • Salt & pepper to taste Salt & pepper Essential seasonings.
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese Creamy, melty topping.
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped Adds freshness.
  • 1 tbsp melted butter, optional For extra golden pastry.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Roll out the thawed puff pastry on a floured surface and cut it into 4 equal squares.
  • Shape each square into a round nest by folding the edges inward and pinching the sides.
  • Brush each pastry nest with egg wash and bake for 12-15 minutes, until puffed and golden.

Cooking the Filling

  • In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks.
  • Drain excess fat, add onion and red bell pepper, and sauté until softened, about 3 minutes.
  • Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.
  • Let the mixture simmer for 5-7 minutes until thickened.

Assembling & Baking

  • Once pastry nests are baked, spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture into each nest.
  • Top each filled nest with shredded cheddar cheese and return to the oven for 5 minutes.

Garnishing & Serving

  • Brush the edges of the nests with melted butter and sprinkle with fresh parsley.
  • Serve warm with a side of salad or sweet potato fries.

Notes

Be careful not to overcook the pastry or overfill the nests. Store leftovers properly for best results.
