  • 1 14.5 oz can sauerkraut, drained Adds distinct flavor and texture.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish.
  • Cut 4 slices of rye bread into cubes and spread them evenly in the bottom of the greased baking dish.
  • Turn the remaining 2 slices of rye bread into breadcrumbs and set aside.
  • Layer half the meat over the bed of bread cubes, followed by sauerkraut, pickles, and 1 teaspoon of caraway seeds.
  • Sprinkle on 2 cups of shredded Swiss cheese.
  • Add the rest of the meat and press down gently.
  • Top with the remaining cheese and the other teaspoon of caraway seeds.
  • In a bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, mustard, and creamy dressing.
  • Pour the egg mixture evenly over the dish.
  • Sprinkle the reserved breadcrumbs on top and cover with foil.
  • Bake for 45 minutes and let rest for about 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

For a vegetarian option, substitute the meat with roasted vegetables. For different flavors, mix in various cheeses or sauté the sauerkraut to mellow its taste.
