Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

Mix the Dry Ingredients

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Blend these dry ingredients thoroughly.

Mix the Wet Ingredients

  • Add the whole milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract to the dry mixture. Beat everything together on medium speed for about 2 minutes to create a smooth batter.

Stir in Boiling Water

  • Carefully stir in the boiling water. The batter will be thin, which is fine for ensuring a moist cake.

Bake the Cakes

  • Pour the batter evenly into prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool the cakes in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Make the Frosting

  • In another mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and cocoa powder together until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, alternating with whole milk, beating until smooth. Stir in vanilla extract and chopped pecans.

Assemble the Cake

  • Once the cake layers are cooled, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread chocolate frosting on top, then place the second layer on top and frost the remaining sides and top.

Garnish and Serve

  • Garnish with whole pecans and chocolate shavings to add flavor and elegance.

Notes

For best results, ensure ingredients like eggs and butter are at room temperature. Sift cocoa powder to avoid lumps in frosting. Toast chopped pecans for deeper flavor. Store covered at room temperature for up to 3 days or in the refrigerator for 5-7 days.
