Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt until well combined.
  • Pour in the vegetable oil and warm water, stirring until a soft dough forms.
  • Knead the dough for about 2-3 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Cover the dough with a towel and let it rest for 20 minutes.
  • On a floured surface, roll the dough into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Cut the dough into 3-inch squares or triangles.

Frying

  • Heat vegetable oil to 375°F (190°C) in a deep skillet or pot.
  • Carefully drop a few pieces of dough into the hot oil, frying until golden brown and puffed up, about 1 minute per side.
  • Remove the sopapillas from the oil and drain on paper towels.
  • While warm, dust with powdered sugar and drizzle with honey. Serve immediately.

Notes

Allow the dough to rest for better texture. You may cut larger pieces for thicker sopapillas. Maintain oil temperature for consistent results. For extra flavor, add cinnamon to the sugar before dusting.
