Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Whisk until mixed.
  • Slowly add in milk, whisking continuously until the mixture is smooth.
  • Stir in finely chopped onions until they are evenly coated in the batter.

Cooking

  • Pour about 1/4 inch of vegetable oil into a skillet and warm it over medium-high heat.
  • To check if the oil is ready, drop a small spoonful of batter into the oil—it should sizzle immediately.
  • Using a spoon, drop small amounts of batter into the hot oil, lightly flattening each one with the back of the spoon.
  • Fry for 2–3 minutes on each side, until crisp and golden brown.

Serving

  • Once golden, transfer fritters to paper towels to drain excess oil.
  • Serve warm with a dollop of sour cream or your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

Use sweet onions like Vidalia for added sweetness. Experiment with spices for a kick. Seal leftovers in an airtight container; reheating restores crispiness.
